Carat

What is the meaning of Carat?

The term carat refers to the unit of weight used to measure diamonds and other gemstones. One carat is equivalent to 0.2 grams. The carat weight of a diamond is one of the 4Cs used to evaluate its quality and plays a significant role in determining its value.

However, it's important to note that two diamonds of the same carat weight can have very different values based on their cut, color, and clarity.

What is the meaning of Carat?

Is a diamond with more carats always more valuable?

Taken by itself, carat weight does not determine a diamond’s value. This means that the size of a diamond can increase its value and rarity, but is less important if it is not matched with a good grade of color, clarity and cut with proper proportions.

Nevertheless, size does indeed contribute to increase the value of a diamond, as large stones are rarer than small ones.

Key Points About Carat Weight:

Size and Weight:

While carat is a measure of weight, not size, there is a correlation between carat weight and how large a diamond appears. However, the cut of the diamond greatly affects its dimensions and how large it appears to the eye. For example, a well-cut diamond might appear larger than another diamond of the same weight with a poorer cut.

Price:

The price of a diamond increases with carat weight because larger diamonds are rarer and more in demand. However, the price does not increase linearly with weight. For instance, a 2-carat diamond will typically cost more than twice as much as a 1-carat diamond of similar cut, color, and clarity due to its rarity.

Carat and Quality:

A higher carat weight does not necessarily mean a more valuable diamond if the diamond is poor in cut, color, or clarity. A smaller diamond with excellent cut, color, and clarity can be more valuable than a larger diamond with poor characteristics.

Here is a visual illustration of how the carat can significantly impact the perceived value of a diamond.

Here, we present three diamonds with identical characteristics in terms of Clarity (VVS1), Color (G), and Cut (Excellent).
Our focus now shifts to the variable that sets them apart: the carat weight.
